MITOSIS

  • The purpose of mitosis is cell division
  • Mitosis follows interphase which is divided into four groups
  • Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase
  • Each mitosis cell has to have its own nucleus and DNA
  • Two sister chromatids break apart so the cell has 1 chromosome

INTERPHASE

  • The purpose of interphase is cell duplication
  • By the end of interphase a cell has two full sets of DNA
  • Interphase is divided into 3 phases
  • Gap1 ( g1), gap2 (g2), and synthesis(s)
  • Cells spend a lot of there life in interphase

PHROPHASE

  • Chromosomes shrink and are more visible
  • The nucleus disappears
  • By the end of prophase the centrioles have moved to opposite sides of cell
  • While the microtubules moved to the center of the cell
  • Then metaphase begins

METAPHASE

  • Metphase is the second phase of mitosis
  • It's made known by two events
  • Chromosomes line up across the center of the cell
  • Microtubules connect the centromere of each sister chromatid to the centrioles

TELOPHASE

  • Telophase is the last phase of mitosis
  • Chromosomes uncoil
  • Nuclear membranes go around each pole of the cell
  • Microtubules break down and fall apart
  • Cytokenesis( not a part of mitosis) begins

CYTOKENESIS

  • Is the division of the cytoplasm into two cells
  • Cytokenesis Is different in plant and animal cells
  • In animal cells the cell membrane forms a trench or furrow
  • Plant cells have something known as a cell plate
  • Which forms in between the divided nuclei
