PRESENTATION OUTLINE

MITOCHONDRIA

BY.ROBERT FUNDERBURKE,MAURIO THOMASSON, JOSE

MAIN FUNCTION

  • To produce adenosine triphosphate. (ATP)
  • ATP is produced in what they call the cell's power plant.
  • Digest food for nutrients for the cell.

LESSER KNOW FUNCTIONS

  • They are involved in other task like signaling
  • Cellular differentiation,cell death,as well as the
  • Controll of the cell cycle, and growth.
  • (Cellular differentiation is the process in which a less
  • Specialized cell becomes a more specialized cell type)

DISEASES CONNECTED TO THE MITOCHONDRIA

  • CPEO
  • (Chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia)
  • This disease slowly progressive paralysis of the extraocular muscles.
  • This disease causes bluryness and possible loss of eye sight. This disease
  • Can also spread though others cells.

THE HISTORY OF THE MITOCHONDRIA

  • The earliest records on intracellular structures that probably represent
  • MItochondria go back to the 1840s, only s few years after the
  • discovery of the cell Nucleus.
  • Richard Altmann found the mitochondria in the 1840's but the term
  • Mitochondria was coined by a man named Carl Benda in 1898.
