Timeline

  • Tension between slave & free states
  • 1819- Missouri's 2nd attempt at being submitted to the Union
  • Caused an uprise between slave & free states
  • Missouri admitted as 24th state
  • Maine is admitted as a free state

Timeline

  • Jesse Thomas amended Missouri Compromise Line
  • 1854 - Repealed by Kansas-Nebraska Act
  • Declared unconstitutional by Dred Scott case of 1857

Missouri Compromise

  • Territories south of the Ohio R. and Mason Dixon Line
  • Missouri was north of it, and had lots of slaveholders
  • Tension because offset balance of power in Congress

  • Purpose: To open up thousands of farms and land
  • Become a problem
