MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Founded on November 1, 1776
  • Founded by Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order by father Junipero Serra
  • Parts were destroyed during an earthquake on December 8, 1812
  • It was rebuilt in 1895 by the Landmarks Club of Los Angeles

BUILDING MATERIALS

  • Mission San Juan Capistrano was made of adobe buildings
  • Adobe is made of sand, sandy clay, and straw
  • This mixture is shaped into bricks and dried in the sun

NATIVE AMERICANS

  • The Juaneno tribe
  • Original habitants of Orange County
  • Provided manpower in the construction of the mission
  • Their name came from San Juan Capistrano

LIVESTOCK

  • 10,000-14,000 cattle
  • 12,000 sheep
  • Goats
  • Pigs
  • Horses
