MISS DEAF AMERICAN PAGENTS

HISTORY 📰

  • The first pageant was in Miami beach, Florida during the 1972 NAD convention.
  • The fist pagents only had five contestants.
  • The idea of pagents came from Douglas J Burke because he wanted to find hidden talents of deaf people.

  • Miss deaf American pageants are held every two years.
  • The ages of the contestant are between 18-28.
  • Young, deaf and hard of hearing women across the U.S. Represent their home state and demonstrate their talents and accomplishments in quest for the NAD miss deaf American title.

JUDGING/ CATIGORIES

  • The girls were judged on community service, academic performance, knowledge of deaf culture, and knowledge of current events.
  • The categories the girls participated in where private interviews, platform presentation, talent performance, evening gown, and onstage interview.
  • Required to give a three minute presentation to test there ability to think on there feet and see how they act under pressure.

Heather Whitestone

HEATHER WHITESTONE

  • Born in Alabama
  • When heather was in fourth grade she was way behind and school and wanted to give up, in till she heard about Hellen Keller and that was who became her role model she ended up going to a school for the deaf and on to collage at Jackson state university.
  • Ballet was her main passion
  • She won miss Alabama in 1994
  • She won miss America in 1995

THE STARS PROGRAM

  • Heather Whitestone created the star program through action and realization of your dreams. It has five points which are positive attitudes, belief in a dream, the willingness to work hard, facing obstacles and building a strong support team.

AFTER PAGEANT LIFE OF HEATHER WHITESTONE

  • Became a motivational speaker
  • Got married and Had three children
  • Appointed by president bush and confirmed by the US senate to the national council on disability.
  • Became a board member for the Hellen Keller foundation for research and education.
  • Was appointed to the advisory council for the national institution of health on deafness and other communication disorders
