What are they

  • The Minnetonka Caves is the largest limestone rock cave in the state of Idaho.

History

  • Minnetonka Cave is a fascinating 9-room cave of stalactites, stalagmites and banded travertine that was originally found by grouse hunters in the early 1900's.

when it was discovered

  • The minnetonka caves were discovered by Americans in 1907 when a grouse hunter found it while hunting in the forest.

why it is signifacnt

  • The cave is a home to five different species of bats. One species, the Townsend's Big-eared Bat while not on the endangered species list it is on the lists of both the State of Idaho and the Forest Service as a species of concern.
