WILLIAM SEWARD AND THE CAPTURE OF JEFFERSON DAVIS

William Seward was the Secretary of State from 1861-1869 under presidents Abe Lincoln and Andrew Johnson.
FACTS
- Seward bought the Alaska territory from Russia
- As a lawyer, Seward was one of the first to use the insanity defense
- On the night of lincolns assassination, he was stabbed nearly to death by a conspirator
- He opposed slavery very intensely
- He recieved criticism for staying in office after Andrew Johnson was sworn in
JEFFERSON DAVIS' ESCAPE/CAPTURE
In May 1865, Jefferson Davis, the Confederate president during the Civil War, tried to escape his home town, Richmond Virginia.
FACTS
- Davis and his cabinet were forced to flee headquarters in Richmond
- They established a temporary headquarters in Danville, VA
- They soon moved farther south due to the heavy Union presence
- On may 10 they were surrounded by union troops at a temporary camp
- There are rumors that he fked in a dress as not to be recognized, but they may be false
