MIDWESTERN CUISINE

  • Hot dish and Jell-o salad are the comfort foods.
  • Strangers are welcome, and caring for your fellow neighbor.
  • A surge of immigration beginning around the time of the Civil War.

HOT DISH

  • Large families, church suppers, and pot lucks are easy hearty meals.
  • Common Hot dishes are tuna with noodles, tater tot casserole, and green bean casserole.
  • Some popular deserts are the Jell-O salad and the cookie bar casserole.

LOOSE MEAT SANDWHICH

  • "Cowboy Food" is a popular loose meat food.
  • The Sloppy Joe is the close cousin to the loose meat.
  • The loose meat sandwich and loose hamburger are seasoned with loose ground beef.

CINCINNATI CHILI

  • Cincinnati Chili is very famous.
  • Chili can be served in two ways in a bowl or without a bowl.
  • There is two-way chili or chili spaghetti.

CORNISH PASTY OR MEAT PIES

  • The Cornish Pasty was originated from Cornwall England.
  • The miners liked the meal for lunch.
  • It's made with meat and vegetables.

PIEROGI

  • Pierogis are dumplings similar to potstickers.
  • They are boiled, baked or fried.
  • They are usually filled with potato, sauerkraut and ground meat.

GOULASH

  • It is popular in Cleveland, Ohio.
  • It is often baked as a casserole.
  • It includes macaroni, tomato sauce and vegetables like corn and beans.

LEFSE AND LUTEFISK

  • These two dishes were originated in Norway.
  • Lefse is a type of flat bread sometimes made of potato.
  • Lutefisk is dried cod, cured with lye.

FARMERS MARKET

  • They have really good and fresh food.
  • There are many farmers markets in the summer.
  • They have sweet corn, beans, tomatoes and peas.

HUNTING AND FISHING

  • There a lot of hunting and fishing clubs in Alaska.
  • They have "Wild Game Feeds"
  • It is more common to eat wild game than expensive domesticated animals.

MUSHROOMS

  • Germans love mushrooms.
  • There are many types of mushrooms.
  • They would be served with fish.

NORTH AMERICAN NATIVE FRUIT

  • The blueberry muffin is the state muffin.
  • Blueberries, Cranberries and Concord grapes are the native.
  • Blueberries are used to make pies, muffins, and bread.

WILD RICE

  • California is the largest producer.
  • Wild rice was is harvested in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
  • Native Americans would go out.

SOURDOUGH

  • Sourdough is one of the most American foods.
  • It is used to make biscuits, bread and pancakes.
  • When the packaged yeast was introduced to the U.S. the sourdough disappeared.

CORN

  • When they first settled in the Midwest they had a lot of cornfields.
  • If times were bad there was only corn to eat.
  • Traveling today you will see cornfields and soybeans.

FESTIVALS

  • Scandinavians celebrate all their heritages.
  • In the summer Scandinavians has a festival.
  • There are many communities that celebrate there heritages like Italian, Czech, and Polish.
