IN THE MIDDLE AGES.

KEY TERMS

  • Guild- a medieval group of craftsmen and merchants, often having considerable power
  • Vernacular- Language or dialect spoke by ordinary people in a region.

GROWTH OF TRADE

  • Improved infrastructure in kingdoms brought up the quality of roads.
  • Sea routes were becoming more protected from pirates.
  • Products: Groceries, spices, lines, pearls, oils, wines, and perfumes
  • Guilds provided security of trade.

GROWTH OF CITIES

  • Cites grew in popularity as trade grew.
  • Cities provided higher paying jobs, and a more exciting lifestyle.
  • Many people left their manors for the city, despite its poverty.
  • Towns were originally run by feudal lords,
  • More schools came about to educate the common man.

GROWTH OF MIDDLE CLASS

  • More people started to come into the working class.
  • This was because of the boom of trade.
  • Employment grew with cities, so more people
  • were able to earn higher wages.
