Octavio Paz

Born in March 31, 1914- Died at age 84 of April 19, 1998.
Octavio Paz, some recognize him as the greatest poet of his time in Mexico.
Some of his work list, ‘The Labyrinth of Solitude,’ ‘Piedra de Sol’ and ‘Eagle or sun,’
Born in Mexico city, Mexico to Octavio Paz Solórzano and Josefina Lozano.
Most noted for his work on The Labyrinth of solitude, which can be summarized into a theme of Mexican identity. Where these young kids born in the U.S during the 40's and 50's aren't accepted by the us nor their roots from mexico, throughout this book we get a feeling of solitude.

Dia de los muertos

Celebrated from October 31 to November 2
It is an event that demonstrates honor and love to our ancestors and it is said that through this our ancestors get to pass onto the afterlife.
Celebrated by decorating, remembering and preparing special food for the one's who have left us for the afterlife.
Dia de los murtos originated due to the Aztecs, Toltec, and Nahua people finding it disrespectful to mourn the dead.

43 Missing students

In September 26, 2014- a total of 43 male students vanished into thin air.
In September 26, 2014- a total of 43 male students from Ayotzinapa Rural were forcibly taken and disappeared in iguala, Guerrero, mexico.
According to national public radio “ Although their remains have never been found, their deaths were variously blamed on corrupt local political and police officials, as well as higher-ups in the Mexican military and the government and, of course, the drug gangs.
Supposedly, there buses were used to transport drugs.

Family

The average mexican family has 2-4 kids.
A typical family consist of both parents but it is not rare to see a single parent raising its children.
It is not rare for a Mexican family to have dozens of aunts and uncles, all immediate and extended relatives are treated with respect and honor.
Typically a Mexican family is gender specific roles , as the man being the breadwinner and the woman being the caretakers.

mariachi

Mariachi is a type of mexican style that can be dated back to the 18th century.
The type of clothing they used is typically (picture)
It originated in Michoacan, colima and jalisco
On average to hire them, it would cost 350-650 an hour
“Mariachis Just like other musical genres, mariachi songs cover all kinds of topics that touch the heart. From love and sorrow to honor and victory, mariachi bands use poetic lyrics to tell age-old stories of Mexico’s people and history.”
“Mariachi music represents the rich history and culture of Mexico with the festive sounds of brass and stringed instruments. It is commonly performed by a group of three or more musicians wearing traditional, intricate ensembles called charro suits.”
Instruments most commonly used are the guitarron, vihuela, acoustic guitar, violin, and trumpet.

Tacos

Fish tacos are the most popular
Favorite plate for Mexicans is Tacos: Tacos are a tortilla folded around various mixtures- typically meat.
The first taco was a fish taco and it originated in Baja California
Glen bell invented the shell taco in 1950.

Landmark-Castillo de chapultepec

emblematic of Mexico’s capital.
Aztecs considered this a sacred hilltop
It offers beautiful views over the city and forest
Chapultepec translates to " at the grasshopper's hill" in Nahuatl.

Heroes and Heroines

Indivuduals that influenced mexico
Frida Kahlo- Female painter, who mostly did self-portrait. Her work represented "Mexicanidad," which is the love of things from mexico.
Don Miguel Hidalgo- Considered father of Mexico's independence. He opposed the Spanish dominance and started a revolt against the Spanish crown.
Sor Juana Inés de la cruz - Philosopher, who had the courage to oppose opinions and speak her beliefs. She is an important Hispanic literary figure. She was also prosecuted for being an intellectual woman.
Benito Juarez- Mexican lawyer, who later on became president of mexico. He fought against foreign occupation. He was a big motivation for those who were born poor, as he was born poor but raised his social statues.

Legend-la LLORONA

Most famously known legend is ‘La llorona,” although it has changed over time- the principle has stayed the same, a woman kills her children and now roams the streets crying for her children. She roams the streets looking for children, then claims them as her owns

Population of 129.2 million 
Mexico has a population of 129.2 million.
Mexico is ranked 11th most populated in the world.
83 percent of those people are Catholics
7 out of 10 from its population lives in poverty.
