On September 16, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a parish priest from the town of Dolores, issued a call to rebellion. In response, rebel leader Vicente Guerrero and defected royalist general Agustín de Itúrbide collaborated to gain Mexico's independence from Spain in 1821.

Located in the continent of North America, Mexico covers 1,943,945 square kilometers of land and 20,430 square kilometers of water, making it the 14th largest nation in the world with a total area of 1,964,375 square kilometers.

Mexico is a federal presidential representative democratic republic, where the President is both head of state and head of government. The current government of Mexico is guided by the 1917 constitution. Mexico's government has three branches, namely the executive, legislative, and judiciary. Mexico has the ninth-largest economy in the world. Its main industries are food and beverages, tobacco, chemicals, iron and steel, petroleum, clothing, motor vehicles, consumer durables, and tourism. It is a major exporter of silver, fruits, vegetables, coffee, cotton, oil and oil products.

Roman Catholicism is the main religion in Mexico; 88 percent of the population five years of age and older identified themselves as Roman Catholic in the 2000 census. Almost all of Mexico is on the North American Plate, with small parts of the Baja California Peninsula in the northwest on the Pacific and Cocos Plates. Some geographers include the portion east of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec including the Yucatán Peninsula within North America.

Feliz Navidad" "La Posadas," the remarkable buildup to Christmas Eve, is perhaps the most delightful and unique Mexican tradition. Beginning December 16th, it commemorates the events in the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Cinco de Mayo –- which means “May Fifth” in Spanish — is not Mexico's independence day. The holiday commemorates the battle of Puebla in 1862 where Mexican troops defeated French troops, although ultimately Mexico was defeated in the war.

Its capital and largest city is Mexico City. Mexico is divided into 32 federal entities, of which 31 are states and one is a federal district.
