Manifest Destiny:
The 19th-century doctrine or belief that the expansion of the US throughout the American continents was both justified and inevitable.

With the United States in control of their capital city and much of the country divided, the Mexicans agreed to a peace treaty called the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In the treaty, Mexico agreed to the border of Texas at the Rio Grande. They also agreed to sell a large area of land to the United States for $15 million. Today this land makes up the states of California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. Portions of Wyoming, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Colorado were also included.

The Mexican-American War was the first American military conflict fought entirely on foreign soil and the first to be closely chronicled by the press. The war ended with American victory and a treaty that increased the nation's size by more than half a million square miles.

RAILROADS

Railroads were of huge importance during this time period. Railroads enabled the spreading of ideas, culture, and even people. The railroad fueled theories of Anglo-Saxon supremacy that fused with national pride to produce Manifest Destiny, the conviction that white Americans were divinely ordained to dominate the continent, from sea to shining sea.

Mexican-American War
Texas had been a state of the country of Mexico since 1821 when Mexico gained its independence from Spain. The Texans, however, began to disagree with the government of Mexico. In 1836, they declared their independence from Mexico and formed the Republic of Texas. They fought several battles, including The Alamo.

Manifest Destiny had a major affect (effect) on Native Americans. Manifest Destiny was the belief held by Americans that settlers were destined to spread out and conquer the continent. The expansion of settlers across the country meant the lands of the Native Americans were annexed and occupied by settlers, destroying the Native American way of life and sometimes making them slaves to the settlers. Native Americans were seen by many settlers as nothing but a hindrance to American expansion.
