MERENGUE

WHAT IT'S ABOUT

• It is a Caribbean style of dance associated with the Dominican Republic and Haiti
• The original merengue was not danced by couples, it was a circle dance

- There was no movement of the hips like there is today -

The origin of the merengue is very similar to that of the "cake walk"

THE MERENGUE WAS INVENTED BY

It is possible the dance took it's name from the confection made of sugar and eggs whites because of the light and frothy character of the dance or because of it's short, precise rhythm

Merengue was invented around the 1900th century
