“FIGHTING FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS HAS TOO OFTEN BECOME

SYNONYMOUS WITH MAN-HATING.”

common misconceptions on modern feminism

  • Feminists hate men
  • Feminism means female supremacy
  • Feminists are angry and scary people
  • Feminism is only for women

Feminism by definition

  • the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities
  • the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes

Feminism's purpose

  • Raise awareness of the explicit sexism in our world
  • promote the recognition that feminism means equality in opportunity and treatment, not to promote one gender or antagonize another
  • foster an environment where the abilities, and achievements of any individual are given equal consideration, regardless of gender

Waves of feminism

First wave (late 19th-early 20th centuries)

  • Goal: open up opportunities for women, with a focus on suffrage
  • Fought for the women's right to vote
  • Propelled by middle class white women

SEcond wave (1960s-1990s)

  • Goal: guaranteeing social equality regardless of sex
  • sexuality and reproductive rights were dominant issues
  • beauty pageants reduced women to objects of beauty dominated by a patriarchy that sought to keep them in the home or in dull, low-paying jobs
  • drew in women of color and developing nations, seeking sisterhood and solidarity

Third wave (mid-1990s)

  • defining feminine beauty for themselves as subjects, not as objects of a sexist patriarchy
  • rhetoric of mimicry, which reappropriates derogatory terms like "slut" and "bitch" in order to subvert sexist culture and deprive it of verbal weapons

Click to Edit

  • "Even though equality exists in the form of legal rights and formally equal opportunities, there must be some underlying mechanisms that curtail women’s actual possibilities of realizing their opportunities.” (Why Women Are Oppressed)

#MeninistTwitter

“a channel for men to express the difficulties of being a man in the 21st Century”

ti balogun

  • first to introduce the term on Twitter as a form of satire in an attempt to mock those who oppose the Feminist ideology
  • “The feminist movement, in particular, certainly makes society aware of the disadvantages of women specifically, and is an ideal that should be respected and further evaluated by those with limited knowledge.”

the "meninist"

Meninist beliefs

  • 1) We are opposed to all forms of misogynist behavior and sexist attitudes; we respect all women. 2) We believe in a woman's reproductive freedom and right to control her own body. 3) We oppose all forms of violence against women, including rape, sexual harassment and domestic violence, as well as all negative

meninist beliefs

  • stereotypes and violence against women in film, television and advertising. 4) We understand the need for men to participate in the women's movement and help end 2000 years of men's patriarchy. We pledge to support women in every possible way we can, including sharing responsibilities around the house and in parenting. :

meninist beliefs

  • 5) We believe that women should be paid in parity to men for the same work done and women should be given the same opportunities in the work environment. We oppose the so-called "glass ceiling" (the oppression of women's ability to advance at the workplace). We oppose the "Old Boy's Network"

THE "MENINIST" NO LONGER STANDS IN SUPPORT OF FEMINIST PURSUITS BUT RATHER SERVES AS A REFLECTION OF MEN'S SHALLOW UNDERSTANDING ON THE GOALS OF THE WOMEN'S MOVEMENT
