INFORMATION PROCESSING - MEMORY

TYPES OF MEMORY STORES

  • Short term sensory stores (STSS)
  • Short term memory (STM)
  • Long term memory (LTM)

SHORT TERM SENSORY STORES

  • Large capacity
  • Held in brain for 1/2 a second or less
  • First 'compartment' of memory
  • Subconscious, information is lost if not immediately attended to
  • Important information will be ENCODED

SHORT TERM MEMORY

  • If information from senses is attended to it will be sent to the STM
  • Capacity is limited
  • Information can only be retained for 60 seconds
  • 5-9 items remain in the STM for as long as they are attended to
  • Chunking allows more information to be stored at one time

SHORT TERM MEMORY

  • If information is rehearsed it will stay in the STM =MAINTAINENCE
  • After 30 seconds of no attention, information will be lost
  • important when learning motor skills, via recollection of previous performances
  • The DCR process happens in the short term/ working memory
  • DCR => DECECTION. COMPARISON. RECOGNITION.

SHORT TERM MEMORY

  • Due to the limited capacity of the STM coaching should be:
  • Given when the player is attentive
  • Brief
  • To the point
  • Information can otherwise be lost before the player has a chance to use it

LONG TERM MEMORY

  • All information from the STM is stored or lost
  • It has a higher chance of being stored when it is rehearsed
  • Thus the LTM is a store of well-learned past experiences
  • Information held is used by STM to compare to new experiences
  • Limitless capacity. Memories can be stored for long periods of time

LONG TERM MEMORY

  • Factors that affect retention and retrieval of information
  • Rehearsal: more rehearsal = more likely to be remembered
  • Meaningfulness= important memories more likely to be kept
  • Speed of learning= faster learnt more likely to be remembered
  • Over learning=more practiced easier memory + retrieval
