PRESENTATION OUTLINE

MEMORIES

By Giselle Lopez

HOW DOES THE HUMAN BRAIN STORE AND RETRIEVE MEMORIES?

Memories are stored by comparing it with another similar memory and familiarizing your brain to it while retrieving it with a three step group system.

OUR SURROUNDINGS HELP US RESTORE OUR MEMORIES

  • Data that catches our attention goes into short-term memory
  • "I saw you yesterday, your features grinned, some silken scarf was waving in the blue"

THE CAPACITY OF THINGS WE CAN REMEMBER IS MINIMAL.

  • Moments are lost 3 seconds after they occur
  • Can only remember up to 7 independent items at the same time
  • Grouping small bits of information into a meaningful units is a "chunk"
  • Our ability to retain information decreases as the chunk becomes more complex

OUR ABILITY TO RETRIEVE MEMORIES IS BY A GROUP SYSTEM

  • Break new concepts to establish a meaning
  • Attach to similar memories
  • Retrieve the concept

IN OTHER WORDS

  • Remembering a memory is made up of a system that each play a different role in
  • - creating, storing, and recalling memories
  • Some information goes into long-term storage in various parts of the cortex...
  • Much of it returning to the sensory cortex areas where we originally received it

FUN FACTS 😛

  • The brain is made up of about 75% water.
  • Your brain consists of about 100 billion neurons.
  • Every time you recall a memory or have a new thought, you are creating a new connection in your brain.
  • While you sleep at night may be the best time for your brain to consolidate all your memories from the day.
