PRIESTHOOD OF CHRIST

  • High Priest and other priests are ministers
  • Ministerial priesthood have a "sacred power"
  • Common priesthood serves by the grace received at baptism
  • Christ is the head who serves as the perfect mediator
  • Passed this responsibility to the apostles

PRIESTHOOD OF CHRIST

  • Apostles appointed many others and formed the Church
  • Appointed 7 deacons to attend to the internal needs of the Church
  • Appointed presbyters, or elders, over each local church
  • Appointed episcopoi, later to be called bishops, as their successors

  • Called for new Rite of Ordination
  • Emphasized that the ordained are successors of Jesus
  • Bishops and priests are continuing His work as signs of Christ
