Databases

A database is a store of data

• used to store lots of data in an organised way
• it holds data in one or more tables
• Big benefit of databases: you can search them quickly to find specific data or use them to generate reports

Tables

• Each table is organised in fields (columns) and records (rows)
• Each table has a primary key (a field which can uniquely identify any record in the table)

A new database starts with a table

• Design view: where you setup your table (create fields, name them, data types, primary key). You can't input any data in this view
• Datasheet view: it loos like a spreadsheet (you can input data, modify/delete data...)

Forms

• are a user-friendly way to enter new data or edit existing data
• They have to be linked to a table

Query

• Database records can be searched
• A query is a list of the things you want the database to look for
• Query results are displayed as a separate datasheet

Complex Searches

• Search for data meeting more than one condition
• OR
• AND
• NOT
