Mechanisms of resistance to antibiotics

Presentation By: Caitlin Quintanilla

What are antibiotics?

"Antibiotics are naturally produced substances that kill off bacteria."

How does this resistance occur?

  • Antibiotic resistance happens when resistant bacteria multiply.
  • While resistant bacteria multiply, vulnerable bacteria die off.
  • Over time, the resistant bacteria are the only bacteria left in the body.
  • Immune to antibiotics, the bacteria continue to weaken the body's health.

Why does this resistance Occur?

  • This resistance occurs due to:
  •          -Selective pressure
  •          -Mutation
  •          -Gene transfer
  •          -Societal pressures

Why does this resistance occur? (Continued)

  •          -Inadequate diagnostics
  •          -Hospital use
  •          -Agricultural use
  •          -Innappropriate drug use

  • Variation- Resistant bacteria, vulnerable bacteria
  • Inheritance- Resistance to antibiotics
  • Selection- Vulnerable bacteria die off while the resistants multiply
  • Time- Happens after multiple generations of bacteria
  • Adaption- Bacteria grow resistant to antibiotic, making antibiotics useless
