WHAT IS IT?

  • Möbius syndrome is an extremely rare congential neurological disorder .
  • It affects the 6th & 7th cranial nerves which causes the person to be unable to move their faces
  • Symptoms include :
  • Limb abnormalties-- Clubbed feet, missing fingers or toes, Chest-wall abnormalities
  • Inability to smile, Crossed eyes, Corneal erosion , and diffirculty breathing or swallowing

How common is it?
Möbius syndrome is extremely rare, however certain parts of the world seem to be more prone to it. However, Brazil has the highest incidents of it.

CAUSE?

  • There is no specific cause for this syndrome
  • Estimated to occur once or twice every million births
  • There is no genetic component to this order nor
  • it is not influenced by enviormental factors

WHAT IS GOING WRONG?

  • It has a small or absent nuclei that controls the cranial nerves
  • Lost or deterioration of nuerons in the facial peripheral nerve
  • Harded tissue of the brain stem nuclei

ANY TREATMENT?

  • For infants, sugery to correct crossed eyes and feeding tubes
  • Physical and speech therapy
  • Plastic reconstructive surgery may be beneficial
  • Nerve and muscle tranfers to mouth to require limited ability to smile

HOW DOES IT EFFECT THEIR LIVES?

  • Some may experience depression
  • Percieved as unhappy, unfriendly
  • Lack of using body language
  • Lack of vocal tone and emotions
