Maya ANgelou's Early Life.

  • She was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1928.
  • Her real name is Marguerite Annie Johnson.
  • Angelou was a victim of violence at a young age.

Beginning of Maya Angelou's Career.

  • Angelou would later move to Egypt and Ghana, working as a freelance writer.
  • When returning to the United States, Angelou would write her memoir, "I Know Why the Caged Birds Sing."

  • Her memoir made literary history as the first non-fiction best-seller by an African-American woman.
  • Dr. Maya Angelou became a celebrated poet, memoirist, educator, dramatist, producer, actress, historian, filmmaker, and civil rights activist.

Her Personal Life.

  • Martin Luther King Jr. and Maya Angelou were close friends; MLK was assassinated on her birthday in 1968. Due to this event Angelou stopped celebrating her birthday for years afterward, sending MLK's widow flowers for over 30 years, until Coretta's death in 2006.

  • Dr. Angelou has served on two presidential committees. President Clinton requested that she compose a poem to read at his inauguration in 1993. Dr. Angelou’s reading of her poem “On the Pulse of the Morning” was broadcast live around the world.

  • Since 1981, Angelou served as Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

  • Dr. Angelou was awarded the Presidential Medal of Arts in 2000. She penned the poem Amazing Peace for President George W. Bush and delivered the poem at the 2005 Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
  • President Barack Obama presented her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor in 2010.

Maya ANgelou's Success.

  • She is decorated with over 50 honorary doctorate degrees.
  • Maya Angelou continued her work in Civil Rights and was widely recognized as a international ambassador for good will crossing lines of race and culture.
