WHO IS MY EXPLORER?
Henson was born on Aug. 8, 1866 in Maryland, U.S.A.
He died in Maryland on Mar. 9,1955
He was an African American Arctic explorer
When he was 14 he was a cabin boy on a ship
Henson lived for 90 years

WHAT DID MY EXPLORER DO?
He was the first person to reach the North Pole with a partner named Robert Peary
He explored greenland
He explored the North Pole but he didn't get any credit for being the first person to reach the North Pole because he was black
Henson and Peary started in New York City, then they traveled to Canada by ship, then they went to Greenland and set up base camp there

He reached the North Pole on Apr. 6, 1909 on his last try but Peary's feet got injured on the way so Henson carried on
They made 7 trips from 1896-1902

He loved adventure
He wanted to be the first person to reach the North Pole
The navy sent Peary and Peary hired Henson to work as his assistant because Henson had strong navigational skills

He explored with food, water, warm clothes, boots, gloves, tents, a dog sled, dogs, snow shoes, legs and paddles
He needed skills to survive the cold weather which was taught to him by the Inuits

HOW DID THINGS CHANGE IN THE WORLD AFTER THE EXPLORATIONS?
Now scientists know that humans can survive up in the North Pole from Peary and Henson's research
Now people know what Inuit people were like and their way of life
Henson also told scientists what the climate is like in the North Pole

REFLECTIVE COMMENT
I think it was unfair that Henson was the first human to reach the North Pole but Peary got all the credit because Henson was black.
I thought it was cool because people could survive the cold back then.
Henson was a risk taker because I it would be cold and scary at the North Pole
