PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ADDING/SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS

KATELYNN TOWNSEND & ARIANA PERRY

Before you must know what these following things are and how to do them....

LCM- least common multiple

finding all the multiples that one number can multiply into. This may help trying to see if fractions are the same or equal.

GCF- greatest common factor

this is finding the multiples of one number or how many numbers that can go into it. This can help when simplifying your fractions

Numerator & Denominator

the numerator is the top number in a fraction.
And the denominator is the bottom number in a fraction

Proper Fraction

a proper fraction has a top number
less than the bottom number

Improper Fraction

an improper fraction
has a top number larger than the bottom number. or it could be equal.

Mixed Number

a mixed number is a whole number and a proper fraction combined.

CONVERTING
mixed numbers into improper fractions

multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the result to the numerator. denominator stays the same.

CONVERTING 2
improper to mixed

divide the numerator by the denominator, find
the whole number.
make the remainder the new numerator. Denominator is the same

Reducing Fractions

make the fractions a small and simple as possible

Now it's time learn how to add and subtract fractions :)

Adding Fractions

simplify (reduce) the fraction if possible, make sure they have the same denominator, and add the numerator. The denominator stays the same!

Subtracting Fraction

going by most of the same rules as the addition, your denominators need to be the same and you just subtract the numerators.
Denominators stay the same!

THANK YOU:)
