RATIOS AND pROPORTIONS

BY kIMBERLY wILKINS & ADREYN HALBMAIER

PROPORTIONS MEANS:

  • A PART, SHARE, OR NUMBER CONSIDERED IN COMPARATIVE RELATION
  • TO A WHOLE.
  • The ratios of 3 to 6 is one half 3/6=3:6=1/2
  • 1 out of one third is equal or two out of sixth which means they are
  • in proportions.

RATIO MEANS:

  • the quantitative relation between two amounts showing the number of
  • times one value contains or is contained within the other.

EXAMPLE ONE

  • An automobile travels 176 miles on 8 gallons of gasoline. How far can it go on a
  • tankful of gasoline if the tank holds 14 gallons?
  • The ratio statement is: 176 miles/8 gallons
  • So the proportion is: 176 miles/8 gallons = x miles/14 gallons

SOLVE

  • 176/8=X/14
  • 8x= 14X176
  • 8x=2464
  • 8x/8=2464/8
  • X=308 miles

ANSWER

REAL LIFE APPLICATION

  • When you prepare recipes, paint your house, or repair gears in a large machine or
  • in a car transmission, you use ratios and proportions.
