  • Born September 11, 1942
  • Duanesburg, NY
  • Average student
  • Claims to be abused by father
  • Later denied any abuse

PRECURSORS?

  • No evident precursors
  • Fathers death in 1971

ADULT LIFE

  • Worked low paying jobs
  • Married Joe Tinning
  • Started having children
  • Problem: all children began to die

JENNIFER

  • Third Child, First to Die
  • Born on December 26, 1971
  • Hospitalized, never taken home
  • According to the autopsy report, the cause of death was acute meningitis

JOSEPH

  • Second child, second to die
  • 17 days after Jennifer died, Marybeth ran to hospital with Joseph
  • Some kind of seizures
  • Cleared and sent home
  • Hours later returned to ER- he was dead (tangled in sheets)

BARBARA

  • First child, third to die
  • Six weeks later, on March 2, 1972 went to ER with Barbera
  • Went home, hours later back at hospital
  • Died from brain swelling

TIMOTHY

  • Fourth child, fourth to die
  • 3 weeks after born-found dead in crib
  • Doctors could not find anything wrong
  • Ruled it out as SIDS

NATHAN

  • Fifth child, fifth to die
  • 6 months old
  • Marybeth noticed Timothy stopped breathing
  • No reason to be dead

MARY FRANCIS

  • Seventh child, sixth to die
  • Taken to hospital-sent home
  • A month later-came back
  • Mary Francis died
  • Wasn't sure but doctors said cause was SIDS

JONATHAN

  • Eighth child, seventh to die
  • 4 months old when rushed to hospital unconscious
  • Saw specialist, and was sent home
  • 3 days later was back at hospital
  • Jonathan had died of cardiac arrest

MICHAEL

  • Sixth child, eight to die
  • Adopted
  • Died at age 2
  • Autopsy showed pneumonia, but not severe

TAMI LYNNE

  • Ninth child, ninth to die
  • Doctors monitored her health for months
  • Was a healthy baby
  • 4 months after birth-found dead
  • Cause was SIDS

NATURE OF CRIME

  • nine healthy children
  • died over a span of 14 years

BEHAVOIR CHANGES

  • After the first death, Marybeth changed
  • Became more distant
  • Strange
  • Confused of what happened

TRIAL

  • Enough suspicion grew within the doctors to have trial
  • Trial took place in 1987

CHARGES

  • Their was only enough evidence to charge her of one murder, but believed she killed all children
  • Second degree murder of Tami Lynne by smothering
  • Even though she admitted to smothering Timothy,Nathan,and Tami
  • Later denied hurting any of her children
  • Sentenced to 20 years

MARYBETH TODAY

  • Still in jail
  • Was denied parole-3 times
  • In 2007,2009,2011

After the investigation, Marybeth Tinning was diagnosed with munchausen syndrome by Proxy
