  • Why: To persuade poor Irish mothers to sell their children to the wealthy as food and make profit.

*MOTIVE*
-To persuade the Irish people that poor mothers in Ireland should raise and sell their children to the wealthy as food. He also includes recipes and the amount of money the mothers would receive for selling their children.

*IMPACT*
-Society didn't take Swift seriously and perceived it as a joke.

UNCLE TOM'S CABIN BY HARRIET BEECHER STOWE

  • CONTEXT: Stowe grew up in the Northeast and experienced both sides of slavery.
  • What: A fiction novel
  • When: Was published on March 20, 1853
  • Where: Connecticut
  • Why: To convince the North to end slavery.

*MOTIVE*
-To persuade the North to abolish slavery and expose it to the nation.

UNCLE TOM'S CABIN

*IMPACT*
-Most abolitionists felt it wasn't strong enough to immediately end slavery. More moderate anti-slavery advocates praised the book. Stowe was instantly an international celebrity and traveled all over the world to raise awareness. There is now a Harriet Beecher Stowe Center in Connecticut.

THE JUNGLE BY UPTON SINCLAIR

  • CONTEXT: This book was born from research by Sinclair in a city's meat-packing plant and slums.
  • What: Fiction novel
  • When: 1906
  • Where: Chicago
  • Why: To expose and increase conditions in the meat-packing industry. He also wanted to expose conditions in Chicago's slums.

*MOTIVE*
-To expose bad conditions in the meat-packing industry. Sinclair also wanted to overall increase conditions in the "slums" (small, dirty places in American cities that immigrants lived in.)

-Led to Meat Inspection and the Pure Food Act of 1906. Showed the public what was really happening in the meat-packing factories.
