Who is Martin Luther King?

  • Martin Luther King Jr was an American Christian minister and civil rights activist
  • He was the spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968
  • He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, United States on January 15th 1929
  • He was the son of Martin Luther King (Senior) who was a Baptist minister and Alberta Williams King

Why is martin luther king famous?

  • MLK is known for his contributions in the American civil rights movement
  • His most famous work is his "I Have a Dream" in 1963, where he spoke of his dream of a United States that is clean of racism and segregation
  • MLK also supported non-violent methods of protesting

What does it mean to be a civil rights activist

  • A civil rights activist is a leader who fights for a political movement dedicated to giving equal opportunities to all individuals
  • Some people who were civil rights activists other than MLK: Rosa Parks, Ella Baker, Bayard Rustin, Ralph Abernathy, Roy Wilkins and etc...

how did Mlk impact civil rights in the US?

  • He was the driving force behind iconic events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the 1963 March on Washington, which helped bring about such landmark legislation as the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.

What is segregation?

  • To segregate means to set someone or something apart from others; to separate
  • Some examples of segregation that occured in the 1950's were in all public facilities such as toilets and work places such as the United States Armed Forces separating white units from the black
  • Segregation ended in 1964 when President Lyndon.B signed the Civil Rights Act, which legally ended the segregation implmented

"I Have a Dream"

  • On August 28, 1963 Martin Luther King delivered a Public Speech in which he called for equal civil and economic rights for everyone as well as an end to racism
  • “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
