MARRIAGE IN 1500s

  • Churches law dictated all legal marriages
  • There were no legal processes needed
  • Many marriages were organised to secure alliances.
  • Mostly the poor people only married for love which was considered foolish in the 1500's.
  • When a marriage took place and the husband proposed he would put his ring on his right hand. After the marriage he would put it on his left hand.

  • Henry the eight changed the divorce rules by putting a clause in the act in conditional restraint of annates this allowed him to appoint hides own bishops and archbishops this happened after archbishop warham died in 1530 Henry overthrow the other church created the Church of England
  • If you did not want to be married to your spouse any more, you had to prove that the marriage had never been valid in the first place
