  • Discovered in 1875 by British ship( H.M.S Challenger

  • The temperature at the bottom is 1 to 4 °C (34 to 39 °F)

Formation

  • Two or more tectonic plates converge
  • The older, denser plate is pushed beneath the lighter plate
  • Deep into the mantle, causing the seafloor and outermost crust to bend
  • Then forming a steep, V-shaped trench
