• Located in the western pacific
• 124 miles east of the Mariana Islands
• Near Philippines
• Majority is a u.s. protected zone
• Discovered in 1875 by British ship( H.M.S Challenger
• National monument (2009, George W. Bush)

• Deepest point 6.8 mile down
• The temperature at the bottom is 1 to 4 °C (34 to 39 °F)
• Perpetual darkness

• Global ocean floor network

Formation

• Two or more tectonic plates converge
• The older, denser plate is pushed beneath the lighter plate
• Deep into the mantle, causing the seafloor and outermost crust to bend
• Then forming a steep, V-shaped trench
