PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Makerspaces in:

Elementary Schools

What is a makerspace?

  • In schools, a makerspace is a place where students can gather to creatively explore their interests.
  • They also learn to use various tools and materials to develop their own projects.

In a makerspace you might find...

  • 3D Doodle pens
  • Arts and crafts materials
  • Cardboard boxes/tubes
  • Logos, Magnetic blocks and K'nex
  • Osmo (an interactive ipad app for elementary school students)
  • Some are more high tech than others

How could it be used

  • Makerspaces can be used in elementary schools to help them get a hands on connection to their lessons.
  • ie: using legos or k'nex to build physical models of something they learned about in classes
  • Getting students involved with the community

some schools use makerspaces to get students involved with projects that help the community, ie: using materials to make items for an animal shelter, or

Why has the Makerspace movement taken off?

  • Provides a more hands on learning experience
  • Connects to lessons
  • Expands/encourages creativity
Personally, I think that the makerspace movement has been so popular is because it gives kids a more hands on learning experience.
They are able to create physical objects which can help them to better understand what they learn in their core classes.
Gives them an opportunity to be creative and use their imaginations, while still learning

Personal Thoughts

  • Makerspaces are awesome!
  • I hope to be able to implement them in my lessons.
I think that makerspaces are a fantastic way to help kids learn! I would without a doubt use them to supplement my lessons if one where to be available at the school I work at.
