what i learned

What I learned:
This assignment was pretty vague in it's conception, which was a neat divergence from other assignments in my grad level education. We were to learn something using internet based sources. The "something" was anything we wanted. I've always wanted to learn how to play the Ukulele, so decided this would be an excellent time to go ahead and give that a try.
I bought my ukulele from Amazon and with my nifty Amazon Prime Membership, I had my uke in two days!

What I accomplished

  • TuningPicking
  • Chords
  • Strumming
  • Tuning
  • Chords
  • Picking
  • Songs
Tuning: The first thing to learn about the Uke is how to properly tune the thing. An out of tune Uke is not a pretty thing.
Chords: There are probably hundreds of chords, I learned about 20.
Strumming: Not mastered, you need to have rhythm to play the Uke.
Picking: A little easier, I just covered the basics.
Songs: "Don't worry, be happy", "Happy Birthday" and "Silent Night".
Instructors: The Ukulele Teacher, Justin Guitar, and Super Ukulele.

What I LOVED

  • Learning an instrument
  • Listening to music
  • Exploring the internet-based learning landscape
LOVED:
Learning an instrument: I love music, my husband loves music. It was nice to be able to produce music without plugging in.
Listening to music: There are thousands of songs I can learn to play, so every time I listened to the radio or Apple Music, I enjoyed it just a little more!
Exploring the internet-based landscape: It's awesome to think about the amount of uke how-to's there are on the web! Knowing I can find a uke tutorial for almost anything is exciting.

What I Hated

  • I have zero rhythm
  • I hate being video recorded
  • I hate HAVING to learn something
HATED
Zero Rhythm: You HAVE to develop a sense of rhythm to play the uke. It's a very cool, chill sound and doesn't sound right if you're half robot like me.
Video Recorded: I don't know how YouTube and Vine people do it. I felt like I looked like a crazy person every time I video recorded myself. I got a little more comfortable with it as I went on.
Have to learn: Best way to ruin something you like - assign it as homework. After this project was over I started to really WANT to learn how to play the uke.

Where I'll Go From Here

  • Learning more songs
  • Improving strumming, picking
  • Singing and strumming
FUTURE GOALS:
Learning more songs: I'm way more motivated to play the Uke now that I don't HAVE to. I plan on learning more songs.
Improve strumming and picking: I plan on working with someone on my lack of rhythm.
Singing and strumming: One day, I hope to get good enough to play and sing at the same time. I don't have a terrible singing voice, so it would be nice to sing and play at the same time.

Final Reflections

  • Stick-With-It-Ness
  • Assignments vs. Choices
  • Virtual Learning
REFLECTIONS:
Stick with it: There were many times where I just wanted to change my whole project, but I stuck with it! As an educator, I'm glad I got this experience as a student so I can work with my kids on these same issues.
Assignments vs choices: I know now sometimes it's not great to mix work and pleasure. I'll be sure to let my students know, too!
Virtual Learning: I can learn ANYTHING online. I hope to learn as much as I can from my PLN!
