  • Self-determination
  • Germany, Italy, Belgium
  • Nationalistic tensions in Ottoman, Hapsburg, and Russian empires

SLAVIC NATIONALISM

  • Nationalist revolts by sultan's subjects weakened the Ottoman Empire
  • Austria and Russia partly responsible for shrinking of Ottoman territories in Europe
  • Serbs wanted Austria-Hungary to join SerbiaーRussia supported them
  • Pan Slavism tried to weaken Austrian rule and prepare territories for future Russian annexation
  • Germany helped Austria-Hungary to fight ethnic nationalism

NATIONAL RIVALRIES

  • Germany’s rapid industrialization threatened British economic dominance
  • Both states built huge iron battleships, called dreadnoughts
  • Germany’s program to build many large battleships threatened British navy
