THE MAGNA CARTA

• Is an document created in order to limit the power of King John.
• Was created after King John raised taxes on the barons.
• Forced upon the king by his barons
• Proclaimed the kings word was not arbitrary
• Only went into effect for 5 days, but remains as an important simbol, influencing many constitutions , like ours.

MAGNA CARTA

• Issued in Runnymede,London,England.
• Stated that all criminals could be punished except through Law of the Land.
• Also stated that no crime, no matter how petty or insignificant, shall not go without trial.
• Law of the Land is a law designated to a specific area, and did not have to be enforced in other area of land.
• Did not actually limit the power of the king by any great significance, but did show that he was bound by law.
