  • Binds to serotonin receptors
  • Theses are responsible for doing certain functions 
  • Interacts with particular receptors
  • Inhibits and excites the receptors 
  • Complex sensory effects-locus coerulus (LC)

Behavior

  • Profound distortions or perception of reality- Hallucinations 
  • See images, hear sounds, feel sensations that seem real 
  • These are known as sensory hallucinations 
  • LSD "trip" may have rapid and intense emotional swings
  • Very pleasant to very unpleasant- Dangerous

Effects

  • Dramatic changes in emotion-Feels more than one
  • Altered sense of time and of self
  • Crossover senses, synesthesia (hearing colors, seeing sound)
  • "Bad Trip"- Flashbacks 
  • All of the effects, pleasant or unpleasant are unpredicatable

Potential uses

  • LSD has been used in psychiatry for its perceived therapeutic value
  • Treatment of alcoholism
  • Pain and cluster of headaches 
  • Spiritual purposes and creativity
  • Does not cause immediate personality change-model psychosis
