LOYALISTS

BELIEFS

  • Wanted peaceful forms of protest
  • Believed violence would give rise to mob rule
  • Would mean loss of economic benefits from British mercantile system

GENERAL

  • Range as high as 500,000/20% white population
  • 1/6 Americans were loyalists
  • Blacks slaves became loyalists, promised freedom for support

PEOPLE INVOLVED

  • Thomas Hutchinson- most hated man in American before Benedict Arnold
  • William Franklin- Illegitimate son of Ben Franklin
  • Joseph Brant- was a Mohawk war leader who fought on the side of the British

OTHERS PERCEPTION TOWARDS LOYALISTS

  • stripped of clothing, covered in tar and feathers and then paraded in public
  • Many suffered regular harassment
  • had property seized
  • were subject to personal attacks

DURING THE REVOLITION

  • They were in constant danger of radical patriots
  • Lost homes and businesses
  • Some went back to Britain, others stayed and helped fight Patriots

AFTER THE REVOLUTION

  • About 100,000 left the country (including William Franklin)
  • Most settled in Canada
  • When loyalists returned, several states excluded them from holding public office
