LOUIE SIMMONS

  • One of the most famous powerlifters and trainers of all time
  • Came up with the idea of the conjugate system
  • His private gym, Westside Barbell, is called the strongest gym on Earth
  • Has trained many people in many different sports, including footbal, MMA, and rugby
  • Has been called the godfather of powerlifting

PERSONAL RECORDS

  • One of two people over 50 years of age to:
  • Squat 920 pounds
  • Bench 600 pounds
  • Deadlift 722 pounds
  • And have a combined total of over 21,000 pounds

RECORDS BROKEN AT WESTSIDE BARBELL

  • Members of the gym have broken over 100 World Records
  • Top 2 Male and Female lifters in the world, Dave Hoff and Laura Phelps Sweatt
  • Has trained numerous rugby and football teams, such as the Seattle Seahawks
  • Also trained raw 700 pound bencher

BACKGROUND

  • Conjugate system developed by various people, but primarily Louie Simmons
  • Louie Simmons developed it after watching the Russians training during the Cold War at the Dynamo Club
  • Used by various orginizations, including several rugby and American Football teams
  • Also used by several Olympic track memebers

ISSUES WITH OTHER TRAINING METHODS

  • Louie Simmons has talked negitavely about the U.S. Olympic Training policies
  • First learned about some aspects of the conjugate system when he visited the Dynamo Club in the USSR
  • Has also heard several rebuttals of training methods by the U.S. Olympic Team from former coaches themselves

THE CONJUGATE SYSTEM

WHAT IS THE CONJUGATE SYSTEM?

  • Also called the conjugate method
  • Not limited to one country, used around the world
  • Three methods that help a person reach maximum strength gain

THREE METHODS

  • Overcoming maximal resistance that causes maximal or near maximal muscle tension, this is known as the maximal effort method
  • Using considerably less than maximal resistance until fatigue causes one to fail, this is known as the repeated effort method
  • Using sub maximal weights accompanied by maximal speed, this is known as the dynamic method
