PRESENTATION OUTLINE

LOST IN THE RIVER OF GRASS

GINNY RORBY REALISTIC FICTION KALEIGH DAVIS

SARAH EMERSON: PHYSICAL TRAITS

  • Wears blue eye shadow to fit in with the other girls
  • Rough skin that has callouses and blisters from when they got lost
  • Has cuts and bruises from when she had to walk through the saw grass

SARAH EMERSON (CON'T): PERSONALITY TRAITS

  • Brave: she was able to go through the Everglades
  • Strong: after the trip she now has the guts to do anything
  • Sweet and friendly: once you get to know her you can tell that she can be a great friend

ANDY MALONE: PHYSICAL TRAITS

  • Much taller than Sarah
  • Scraggly, brown hair
  • Dirty, messy feet from not wearing shoes

ANDY MALONE (CON'T): PERSONALITY TRAITS

  • Fearless: he wasn't afraid when they saw alligators and snakes
  • Friendly: if you get to know him he will be a great friend like Sarah
  • Brave: if you left him alone in the middle of Everglades with no food or water he wouldn't be afraid

Relationship of Characters:
When Sarah and Andy were left alone in the Everglades, they had to get to know each other more and get along. Then they became great friends. They still were even after the trip!

Setting:
The setting takes place in the Everglades. For one, if this story didn't take place in the Everglades, this story would just be plain boring. It wouldn't make sense!
WHERE: Florida in the Everglades
WHEN: June; Summer; 2011
The setting is important because the story wouldn't be as fun or sound as adventurous. It wouldn't really give it the excitement it have while they were going through the Everglades. It gives the audience a vivid and distinct vision that they can imagine while reading the book. The setting gives a clear picture.
The book would be different if the setting were different because then it wouldn't give a clear picture of what they were going through. It would tell a different story. They wouldn't feel the same pain they had in the story if it took place in a different location. It would be entirely new and it wouldn't give it the same excitement that you felt. The book wouldn't be the same.

Point of View:
The point of view in this story is in the first person. It also is in Sarah's point of view. This book goes through how Sarah felt and what her actions were in the Everglades. It described greatly in detail how she felt, when she was sad, when her feelings were uplifted with spirit, and when she felt great joy. It shows how she reacts to all her surrounding objects or living things. For example, when she saw snakes or alligators, she would scream and say, "What is that?!"
The story would be different if it were told in a different point of view because then you wouldn't see or feel what Sarah was going through when she went on the trip. It would just describe the sights and the feelings of another character in the story. If the book described Andy Malone, then it would probably say how he was used to going around in the Everglades and how he felt when he did feel despair and hope. Another reason is that there are many differences between all of the characters in this book, so of course it would be different. Especially this book in particular. There are not that many similarities within the characters, so the novel would be hard to make the same.

EXPOSITION

  • It begins with how Sarah ended up in the Everglades in the first place
  • It describes how she was on the bus to the Everglades with her classmates

CONFLICT

  • Andy Malone's airboat sunk so they were not able to go back the easy way
  • Types of conflicts: external and internal
  • Sarah had internal conflict within herself because of the struggles going through the Everglades
  • Both Sarah and Andy had external conflict with nature, the people around them, and things around them

RISING ACTION

  • Sarah and Andy go on an airboat ride through the Everglades
  • Andy forgot to put the stern plug back in the airboat so it sunk
  • It leaves them no choice but to walk through the Everglades

CLIMAX

  • The airboat is sunk so Sarah and Andy end up walking through the Everglades
  • They encounter many snakes and alligaters
  • One of the snakes that they encounter is wrapped around Andy's ankle
  • The problem started to be solved when Andy and Sarah reached the levee because then they knew where they were going

FALLING ACTION

  • When they reach the levee, then they start to know where they are going
  • They start to spot a search rescue helicopter flying around
  • They find a cabin to stay at, but it was infested by bugs
  • Going through the Everglades started to become easier

RESOLUTION
The outcome of the novel is Sarah and Andy were finally spotted by the helicopter and were taken to their parents. When the airboat sunk, they couldn't fix that. When the water moccasin was wrapped around Andy's ankle, they misled it with Teapot and it slithered away. All together, they were saved by the helicopter. The ending affected the main characters because Sarah ended up in the hospital for a little while, Teapot ended up going somewhere safer, and Andy went back home.

THEME
Survival in Florida's natural habitat.
-Sarah and Andy got lost in the Everglades, so they had to fight for survival
-this novel takes place in the Everglades
-the Everglades is Florida's natural habitat

STUDENT RECOMMENDATION

  • I liked how the novel described what Sarah felt when she went through the Everglades
  • I disliked how the novel didn't describe Andy enough
  • The part that was most interesting was when Sarah and Andy both managed to get the snake off of Andy's foot
  • The reading strategies that i used were asking questions and summarizing each chapter to understand what I'm reading
  • The author's writing style is using character development to express feelings and emotions through the main character

STUDENT RECOMMENDATION (CON'T)

  • Rate: 3
  • I believe that people who like novels about survival or outdoor adventure would enjoy this book
  • My opinion of this book is that it was a very exciting, thrilling novel, but they could've described Andy a little better
