In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a group of boys are stranded on an island after a devastating plane crash. They are left with the task of building a civilization until they are rescued. Although as time passes this task becomes seemingly difficult and their civilization begins to crumble. The Lord of the Flies is about boys that become overtaken by savagery due to lack of authority.

“All at once he felt he could talk fluently and explain what he had to say.” (pg 32)
This quote conveys that Ralph is a confident and level-headed leader that should be in charge of the boys and the island.

“We nearly set the whole island on fire and we waste time, rolling rocks, and making little cooking fires. Now I say this and make it a rule, because I am chief.” (pg 81)
In this quote Ralph is exemplifying his role on the island and what he should be doing as the leader by making rules and setting the boys straight.

We don’t need the conch anymore. We know who ought to say things. It’s time some people knew they’ve got to keep quiet and leave the deciding to the rest of us.” (pg 102)
In this quote Jack conveys a sense of cruelty and dictatorship. He selfishly implies that only certain people should say certain things regarding who should be in power and who shouldn’t.

“Ralph thrust the conch into Jack’s arms and sat on the trunk.” (pg 125)
This quote implies that Ralph has had enough and has given up in regards to trying to keep order on the island and has given Jack the power he always wanted.

“Now Jack was yelling too and Ralph could no longer make himself heard.” (pg 180)
This quote conveys the power Jack attained and has over the boys on the island and how Ralph has weakened and his voice or say in things is no longer listened to.

“Piggy held up the conch and the booing sagged a little, then came up again to strength.” (pg 179)
This quote suggests that the boys on the island haven’t forgotten what the conch represented or the order it brought and that they still remember the security and camaraderie it stood for.

In the end, the boys are rescued but the trauma of forgotten lives and dead friends bring new tragedies and sadness. Ralph learns just how dark someone can become when they are given full power and no restraint. He learns that when no one is there to enforce authority people will turn brutal and cruel. Lord of the Flies is about a group of boys that build a civilization but then in no time destroy it with savagery and brutality.
