  • Was inspired to write lord of the flies when entered the Royal Navy in England. Believed the horrors of the wars were based on the evil people.

POINT OF VIEW

  • 3rd person omniscient
  • Alternates between the boys
  • Helps reader see various changes the boys are undergoing mentally

Setting
DURING WW2, WHILE LEAVING BRITAIN FOR SAFETY, A PLANE FILLED WITH 24 BOYS IS SHOT DOWN AND CRASHES ON AN ISLAND.

CLIMAX

  • All order is lost
  • Conch is crushed
  • Jack takes control and piggy is killed

Main idea
This teaches us to live by rules, follow commands, and value the goodness of others. We tend to satisfy our needs before others

SYMBOLS

  • Conch represents order authority and power. Whoever is holding the shell is respected
  • Island represents the world/garden of Eden
  • Piggys glasses represent intelligence

CHARACTERS

  • Ralph- committed to civilization and morality
  • Piggy- represents scientific, rational side of civilization and social order
  • Jack- cruel and manipulative. Represents our savage instinct

CHARACTERS

  • Simon- connected with nature, and he has spiritual goodness
  • Roger- targets the little kids. Only one that premeditates murder. Kills without conscience
  • Sam and Eric- represents tug of war of good and evil within us
