When you have a word (or two) as your logo, that is called a logotype. Commonly used in commerce, logotypes are the easiest symbols to trademark since the added text can further distinguish your design from others, even if you have similar color schemes or included symbols. Logotypes also allow unfamiliar audiences to 'say' your organization's name – imagine how people, unfamiliar with Apple or Nike, would react if they're just shown the Apple apple and Nike's swoosh ...

In modifying parts of letters, it helps to be familiar with those parts.

Add a quirk to a character
Add an extra something to your logotype ...

Add something extra

In 2010, nobody saw the asshole in PNOY.

To Show #1

Flipped
Notice the subtle flipped #1 created by just snipping out something from the letters.

Modifying

Change something in a letter to make it odd and stand out ...

Change

I'm not implying that Chiz is LGBT but he dares to care about equality (charing!)

Fusing

You can also modify by fusing letters together (there's a #1 added as well).

Substitution

You substitute one a̶b̶n̶o̶y̶ letter with a̶n̶o̶t̶h̶e̶r̶ a symbol, for example ...

Flipped

Or this ...

Negat ve Space

It's a bonus canvas.
Negative is what's "not there" – it's what's formed by the space around your design. You can use the negative space to load information to make your design richer.

The Counter...

... is a negative space
The counter "contra" is the completely or partially enclosed space in letters. Curving strokes that create the counter are called "bowls" ...

It's there, use it

This is not a logotype, btw, coz there's no type.

A bit lazy for my taste ...

Not a logotype per se

Better ...

This is also not a logotype
Designed by Joe Talisic, from Talamban, Cebu City.

Use ur face

I don't think this is official ...
How will you create a logo for Grace Poe, anyway?

Could be a stylized garapata

If she used this ...

This is a seal
The choice of color can invite many scat-tological jokes.

Fan-made?

I don't think this is official. A logo with an enclosure is called a seal ... something to stamp with.

Keep it Simple

Hillary Clinton

While Ms. Clinton's logo is simple enough, it doesn't work in black-&-white. But election logos have a short life-span so who cares.

If you turn all dark colors black, you're left with this

If you turn all warm colors white and cool colors black, it gets worse.

Here's the US Elections candidate logos/logotypes.

Hillary's is the only one not looking good in black-and-white. But who cares – she only needs to display it for several months and she only needs it to get elected so fuck black and white.

... unless your logo is to be featured in an online market for the holidays. Treating logos like this is actually a violation of some of some corporate logo usage manuals but no one is complaining.
