  • spent the day at work
  • had little energy, space, and light for rec.
  • new industrial life didn't agree with old traditions
  • in 1850's, rec. improved with the rise of middle class
  • music and sports gained popularity

  • desperate times led to "poor houses"
  • set up by government
  • Poor Law of 1834 created workhouses for poor
  • designed to be harsh places to discourage being on relief
  • very similar to prisons; shows desperation
