Soliloquy-
Long speech in which a character who is alone onstage expresses his/her thoughts aloud

Foil

  • a character whose personality and attitude contrast sharply with those of another character
  • highlights both characters' traits

Prologue

  • an introductory scene in drama
  • Some Elizabethan plays include prologues that comment on the theme or moral point that will be revealed in the play

Aside-
words spoken by a character to the audience or to another character that are not supposed to be overheard by others on stage

Blank Verse

poetry written in unrhymed iambic pentameter

Iambic Pentameter

line of poetry that contains five unstressed and five stressed syllables

Tragedy

  • drama that ends in catastrophe- most often death- for the main characters

Tragic Hero

  • protagonist, or central character
  • usually fails or dies because of a character flaw or cruel twist of fate
  • high rank or status

Tragic Flaw

  • decision that is often an error in judgement on the part of the hero

Dialogue

Conversation between characters in a story or play

Dramatic Monologue

A long speech directed at other characters onstage

Stage Directions

tells where the scene takes place as well as who's on stage and what they're doing

Couplet

Two consecutive lines of poetry that rhyme

Sonnet-
Fourteen-line poem- usually written in iambic pentameter- having a specific rhyme scheme
