  • A comparison that does not use like or as
  • For example: you are the apple of my eye

PERSONIFICATION

  • Giving human qualities to a non-living object
  • For example: the pen danced across the paper

ALLITERATION

  • The repetition of consonant sounds
  • For example: Brittany brought Brianna a bountiful breakfast.

IDIOM

  • A phrase which has a meaning other than its direct meaning
  • For example: this haiku deck is a piece of cake!

HYPERBOLE

  • Exaggeration used for dramatic effect, not to be taken literally
  • For example: I'm so tired I could sleep for a year.

ONOMATOPOEIA

  • A word that sounds like the common sound of the object it describes
  • For example: the train went choo choo!

EUPHEMISM

  • Saying something negative in a less abrasive way
  • For example: instead of saying someone has died, you might say they've gone to heaven.

SPOONERISM

  • Reversing beginning letters in words to create humorous effect
  • If an author wanted to add humor, they might have a character go to the concession stand for cop porn... Instead of popcorn!
