PRESENTATION OUTLINE

WHAT IS LINEAR EQUATION?

  • It has one or two variables.
  • No variable in a linear equation is raised to a power greater than 1 or used as the denominator of a fraction.
  • When you find pairs of values that make the linear equation true and plot those pairs on a coordinate grid,
  • all of the points for any one equation lie on the same line. Linear equations graph as straight lines.

HOW DO YOU GRAPH A LINEAR EQUATION?

  • Locate the y-intercept on the graph and plot the point.
  • From this point, use the slope to find a second point and plot it.

Variable(s) in linear expressions:

  • Cannot have exponents (or powers).
  • Cannot multiply or divide each other.
  • Cannot be found under a root sign or square root sign.

What is the slope of a line?
The slope of a line is a number that describes both the direction and the steepness of the line.

How do you find Slope of a Line?
To find the slope, we will need two points from the line.

How can you tell if an equation is linear?
If a function has no exponents greater than 1.

HOW DO YOU USE SLOPE TO GRAPH AN EQUATION?

WHAT IS SLOPE INTERCEPT FORM?

  • It's a standard method for writing the equation of a line. It has two variables,
  • X and y, and an unlimited number of "solutions" (the line is infinitely long).

What is direct variation?
A relationship between two variables in which one is a constant multiple of the other. In particular, when one variable changes the other changes in proportion to the first.

What is constant proportionality?
A relationship between two variables in which one is a constant multiple of the other. In particular, when one variable changes the other changes in proportion to the first.
