THE FALKLANDS/MALVINAS WAR

  • Who: Britain and Argentina
  • What: war over the Falklands/Malvinas islands
  • When: 1982
  • Where: south coast of South America

WHY?

  • Argentina wanted to claim the islands that were once theirs
  • Margaret Thatcher (Britain Prime Minister) was lacking in popularity
  • She thought starting a war against Argentina would raise her popularity

CAUSES

  • Argentina was economically dependent on Britain
  • Britain was going to give the islands to Argentina
  • But the islanders wanted to stay British
  • There was recently a military coup in Argentina
  • That led to an unstable government

  • General Leopoldo Gattieri (Argentina)
  • Admiral Jorge Anaya (Argentina)

IMPORTANT DATES

  • April 2nd, 1982- Argentina invades islands
  • May 1st, 1982- first battle
  • May 21st, 1982- battle on land begins
  • June 14th 1982- Britain surrounds Stanley, Argentina surrenders

SPANISH CIVIL WAR

  • Who: Spain nationalists vs. Republicans
  • What: a civil war over Communism
  • When: 1936
  • Where: Spain

WHY

  • Many felt communism would relieve poverty
  • Weak government, unstable Economy
  • Church & state often disputed
  • Large divide between rich and poor

  • Sept 4th, 1936- new republican government formed
  • Oct 29th, 1936- Soviet intervention begins
  • Apr 26th, 1937- German condor legion destroys Guernica
  • Sept-Oct 1937- Nationalists capture northern Spain
  • Apr 1st, 1939- Franco announces end of war

THE GULF WAR

  • Who: Allies (US, Britain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt) vs. Iraq
  • What: Iraq tried to take over Kuwait
  • When: 1990-1991
  • Where: Kuwait

CAUSES

  • Long term causes- Iran & Iraq have had long standing conflicts
  • Short term causes-
  • Saddam accused Kuwait of stealing oil from Iraq
  • Saddam invaded Kuwait

IMPORTANT PEOPLE

  • Saddam Hussein- leader of Iraq
  • George Bush Sr.- President of the United States

IMPORTANT DATES

  • Aug 2nd, 1990- Iraq invades Kuwait
  • Aug 7th, 1990- US deploys in Saudi Arabia
  • Feb 27th, 1991- Kuwait City liberated
  • Mar 3rd, 1991- formal cease fire
  • Apr 3rd, 1991- UN formally ends the Gulf War

CHINESE CIVIL WAR

  • Who- nationalists vs. Republicans
  • What- fighting over communism
  • When- 1927-1937, 1946-1949
  • Where- China

  • Manchu Dynasty overthrown
  • Yuan Shikai took over and then died
  • Causing regionalism dividing China
  • GMD and CPC formed

  • June 1926: northern expedition launched
  • July 1937: Japan invades China (end of 1st civil war)
  • Mar 1946: fight between GMD & CPC (starting 2nd civil war)
  • Oct 1949: Mao announces the Peoples Republic of China
