PRESENTATION OUTLINE

WHAT ARE THE UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS OF LIGHTNING

  • A lightning bolt speed travels up to six thousand miles per second.
  • One type of lightning is called an elve. This lightning speed travels faster than a blink of a eye.
  • A flash of lightning is brighter than ten million one hundred watt lightbulbs.
  • Lightning can be made in a laboratory by a van de graaff static electricity generator.
  • When a lightning bolt strikes, the electrical energy quickly changes into heat.

HOW CAN LIGHTNING HELP

  • Lightning destroy millions of acres of trees and brush each year, they also serve a useful function. By burning thick under brush, they create space in the wilderness.
  • Lightning also changes some of the oxygen in the air into ozone which helps clean the air.
  • When lightning storks it heats the air and makes two gas, nitrogen and oxygen.
  • The electricity in a lightning bolt would power one lightbulb for only a mouth.

WHAT CAUSE LIGHTNING TO OCCUR

  • Lightning first start when light and heat from the sun strike the Earth.
  • Lightning begins with violently moving ice crystals and raindrops in storm clouds.
  • Starting in the cloud, small steamers of sparks called stepped leaders begin to shoot downward in fifty yard leaps.

FUN FACTS

  • Do you know that a lightning is six thousand times faster than our spaceship.
  • Do you know that temperatures in the path of a lightning bolt can reach as high fifty thousand degrees fahrenheit. Five times faster than the surface of the sun.
  • Did you know that every second of every day more than a hundred lightning bolts strike the earth. That about ten million lightning bolts in a single day.
  • And did you know that lightning kills about one hundred people a year in the United States.
