What is Light?Light is a form of energy. Light needed to see around us. When light is reflected, it hits our eyes and then our eyes turn it into color and sends it to our brain to let us understand what the image is.

Properties of Light
Light Travels in Straight Lines
If you take a pipe and bend it, and shine a light through it. You would not receive the light at the other end. Light only changes direction when the surface is smooth and shiny.

Activity: Light travels in straight lines
Take a bent pipe and shine a flashlight through it. You will not get any light at the other end because light cannot change direction. This proves that light travels in straight lines.

Light Travels VERY Fast.
You know how fast light travels? 300,000 kps(kilometers per second)! At this speed, it can go round the earth 8 times in one second, and to the moon in 1.225 seconds!

Do some math. If light travels at 300,000 kps, then how much time would it take to go to the sun, if the sun is 149,000,000(149 million kilometers) kilometers away?

(Hint: In one million, there are ten groups of a hundred thousand.)

Light Travels Much Faster Than Sound
When lightning strikes, so does thunder. But why do we see lightning before thunder? This is because light travels around 874,000 times faster than sound.

Experiment:
When lightning strikes, count the amount of seconds it takes for thunder to be heard. If the difference is 5 seconds, the main part of the storm is a mile away, and so on.
