'When?' is difficult

Who and where?

  • Inuit people used very simple designs
  • In the 12th century, the Chinese made them from smoky quartz (a stone)
  • Judges wore them to hide their expression
  • In 18th century, James Aycough began tinting spectacle lenses blue and green because he thought it improved vision
  • 1929, Sam Foster started selling sunglasses on the beaches in the USA to protect people from the sun.

Polarised lenses

Edward H Land in 1936

Sunglasses go from Cool to vital

  • Clear vision by cutting the glare of the sun
  • UV protection

What is polarisaton?

  • Light travels in waves that bounce and fly everywhere! They vibrate and radiate everywhere.
  • When these waves are 'aligned' or captured to go in one place, that is polarisation
  • Basically, it is a way to capture the waves of light you want, but keep others out.
  • Polarised lenses absorb some of the waves, and allow in some. It's like a filter.

Important? Yes!
Just imagine playing a sport when light waves are hitting off of everything, including the ball. Reflected light will bounce into your eyes.

Polarised lenses will absorb some of that light reflecting off the ball, and other surfaces of the court or stadium.
