PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Life cycle of our closest star

(the astronomy type, not a celebrity)

Before we get too far, what is a star made of?

Our sun (the nearest star) was, like all other stars, born in a nebula*. It was born roughly 4.5 billion years ago. Since then it has been using nuclear fusion* to combine hydrogen atoms into helium atoms in its core. It will continue to do this for the next 7 billion years before using up the hydrogen and becoming a red giant*.

things that will happen before our sun dies:
1.1 billion years: 10% brighter; green house effects will increase, causing water to be lost to space, and the atmosphere will become dry like Venuses.

*
Nebula- Iornized gases formed by parts of the interstellar mediums clumping together
Nuclear fusion- nuclear reaction where atomic nuclei of low atomic number fuse to form a heavier nucleus which releases energy.
Red giant- A dying star in its last stage
