LGBT AROUND THE WORLD

HOMOPHOBIA EXPLAINED

There's a large spectrum of sexualities, in our global village. More than 10 orientations can be found around the world.

Some people don't accept the cultural diversity that sexuality brings.

And, some countries are more homophobic than others. Such examples include Russia, Saudi Arabia, and other related countries.

In some countries, you can be sentenced to death for being LGBT. In others, you can be imprisoned for life.

One particularly homophobic country is Russia, as I mentioned before. 85% of its population think that being LGBT is wrong.

Even though homosexuality is considered normal in many other countries, like Canada and the USA. We have many "pride" parades, such as the one shown in the picture.

President Putin made some 'anti-gay laws', which basically took all the rights of the LGBT. It prohibits access to "gay propaganda", which are basically any movies or pictures of the sort depicting "gay" things. Even having 2 guys holding hands can land you with the police.

LGBT people face other. very challenging obstacles in their life, such as bullying. They aren't bullied for their skin colour, or hairstyle, or clothes, etc... They're simply bullied because of who they like.

2 out of 3 LGBT people are more likely to commit suicide, than their straight counterparts. This is due to the bullying that I mentioned earlier.

Homophobia is mainly caused by religion. Some call LGBT a sin/an abomination, e.g Christianity. A particular church called the Westboro Baptist Church protests against gay people, with signs like "God Hates Fags" as you have seen earlier.

This wonderful community is fighting back so hard against homophobia. There have been many pro-LGBT organizations around the world. Even some Asian countries, which are stereotyped to be not as accepting, such as Vietnam, have become more accepting of LGBT over the years.

Remember; you can't erase history, but you can make history. Let's stand against homophobia, and make this world a more accepting place.
